After the jump: How big a Lost fan am I? Do I watch Archer? Who are my favorite fictional characters? Which Lost characters do I think will bite the big one? Why do I hate Jack so much? Will I be recapping any other shows next year? and more!
On a scale from 1 to 10 on Lost fan-ness, 10 being die hard, what are you? – Derek
I think I’d put myself at about an 8.5. I blog/think/talk about Lost incessantly, but I do draw the line somewhere! I don’t read or write fanfiction, I don’t participate in all those crazy games ABC is always running, I never watched mobisodes or got the numbers tattooed on me somewhere. I however did fly 5,000 miles to Hawaii to walk on the Lost beach, I’ve spent lots of years furiously blogging about it, I’ve heard every Darlton podcast, and my iPod has the numbers etched on it. But I feel like the Doc Jensens, DocArzts and the DarkUFOs are the real 10’s on that scale, and they are much more devoted/obsessed than me!
One thing I regret never having gotten the chance to do is go to the Comic-Con. That would have probably sent me over the edge.
Have you watched “Archerâ€? I think you’d love it if you haven’t. It’s on FX and is done by the guys who created “Sealab 2021.†– TBirdy
I’ve only seen one episode of Archer and I didn’t like it very much, (my friend and I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on) but I’ve heard from several people that I would love it. I think I’m going to give it another shot.
In a bizarre twist, the character named Pam is my identical cartoon doppelganger:
Especially when I was in my Mad Men costume last Halloween:
Without referencing spoilers, the consensus among LOST fans seems to be that there will be huge bloodshed before the series ends. Which characters do you think will die/survive and why? – Malka
Based on my gut feelings:
Jack, Sawyer, and Kate will not die because they are our heroes, and any of their deaths would throw the whole show off balance.
Hurley will not die because a.) the fans would riot b.) he is the voice of the audience and c.) Damon & Carlton are not Joss Whedon, who always kills the most beloved characters for no reason at all.
Despite all this sacrifice talk, I do not think Desmond will die because his and Penny’s relationship is the only healthy one on the entire show, and I think (and hope!) they want to give them a happy ending.
People I think we might lose before the very end: Claire, Sayid, Widmore, Ilana, Richard.
People I think will survive based on nothing but my gut feeling: Ben, Lapidus, Miles, Eloise, and hopefully Jin and Sun.
My question is this: do you HATE Jack and Kate, or are you merely annoyed by them? – Lurky McLurker
Kate annoys me. The flip-flopping between Jack and Sawyer, the teary glances, the “I’m going with you” thing, – I find it all very tiresome. At times Kate can be awesome (I like it when she’s thinking for herself, making her own decisions and not letting one of the guys think for her), but those moments seem to be few and far between. I feel like the writers had a chance to make her this kickass heroine, but most of the time she’s just making a bunch of horrible decisions. But I don’t hate Kate.
I do, however, hate Jack. A lot. If you hadn’t noticed. LOL.
Keeping in mind that he is a fictional character who does not exist outside of some lines written on a page, if I met a Jack in real life I would just have to SHAKE HIM. I find Jack to be self-righteous, hippocritical, and smug. He’s constantly bossing people around, and yet when people look to him to lead, he has a hissy fit. He talks to the other characters like children, his Daddy Issues are out of control, he’s stubborn as hell, and we all know how I feel about his ever-present Jears. In short, he drives me absolutely bonkers.
The writers have created this very complex and layered character that has all the flaws a real life person would have, so I appreciate the craftsmanship of Jack. But it doesn’t make me hate him any less. The only times I find myself liking him is when he’s unsure of himself, which almost never happens.
How did you first get into Lost? – Eneri
Honestly when I saw all the advertisements for Lost before it premiered, I assumed it was some kind of stupid fictional Survivor kind of thing, and I had no intentions of watching it. But a coworker said it looked like it might be cool, and there was nothing else on that night, so I ended up watching the premiere and FREAKING OUT.
Blew. My. Mind. Been hooked ever since. I’m so glad nothing else was on that night.
Who are your top three favorite fictional characters (Lost or otherwise) and why? – FlakyArtist
As far as Lost goes, Sawyer, Hurley, Ben, Locke, and Desmond have always been my favorites. But other than Lost…
Ignatius J. Reilly, A Confederacy of Dunces: Read this book. I highly HIGHLY recommend it, you will laugh your ass off. Igantius is a gigantically fat man who is kind of like a combo of Kramer and Newman, only obsessed with the Middle Ages and living in New Orleans. He hates everyone and everything, except for maybe hot dogs and books. The way he talks is out of control:
“I have sought escape in the Prytania [a movie theater] on more than one occasion, pulled by the attractions of some technicolored horrors, filmed abortions that were offenses against any criteria of taste and decency, reels and reels of perversion and blasphemy that stunned my disbelieving eyes, then shocked my virginal mind, and sealed my valve.â€
Gaius Baltar, Battlestar Galactica: This guy had about 600 layers and James Callis portrayed them all to perfection. He was both a villain and victim; a man of science and a man of faith. His scenes were moving, frightening, intriguing, and funny. That kind of character is rare on TV or any other medium for that matter.
Neville Longbottom, Harry Potter: The ultimate underdog! My heart exploded for Neville throughout the entire series. One of my absolute favorite lines in the entire series is “He’s dot alone! He’s still god be!†from Order of the Phoenix. And the way he fought in the 7th book was spectacular. Love that boy.
Runners up: GOB Bluth, Arrested Development; Liz Lemon, 30 Rock; Aragorn, Lord of the Rings; Han Solo, Star Wars; Holden Caufield, Catcher in the Rye; Starbuck, Battlestar Galactica
What’s your real job? Do your employers know how popular you are? Are they insulted that you started the “Lost†recaps because you were extremely bored at work? – Genevieve V.
For the last 3 years I’ve been working with a team of business analysts revamping mortgage documents – super exciting, I know. It involved lots of spreadsheets. I was actually laid off last week, so if anyone’s got a job for me, drop me a line ;D
Most of my coworkers who watch Lost knew about my site, although I kind of kept it on the DL for the first year I worked there. It’s bad enough trying to acclimate to a new office, let alone trying to explain to everyone you work with that you are this psycho Lost fan that is famous on the internet without sounding like a jackass.
I quit the job I started writing my recaps at (due to extreme boredom) 4 years ago, so no, I doubt they are insulted. But if they are I’m glad because that job suuuuucked haha.
Will you be recapping any other shows once Lost is over? – Half the people who wrote in with questions
At the moment I can’t be sure. My recaps take a ridiculous amount of time to write (usually about 12 hours a piece), so when Lost season starts, my social life kind of disappears for 6 months. I’m not sure I can be that dedicated to any other show – although I am toying with the idea of recapping True Blood this summer. But I’m not making any promises yet!
Do you like movies about gladiators? – Antoinette
Yes, but I’ve never been to a Turkish prison.
i saw this poll on dark ufo (Which Lost Fan Annoys You the Most?) and thought it was brilliant- would u mind answering it for me? i wanna know what u pick!:) – LaFleur
Here are the choices for those who don’t feel like clicking:
The Kate basher
The answer junkie
The “writers just make it up as they go along”-snob
The continuity error seeker
The Locke death denier
The love triangle hater
The “what about Walt?” questioner
The “what about Libby?” questioner
The “what about Annie?” questioner
The “Squeely” Shippers 12%
Other – Leave Comment
I chose The answer junkie because those people PISS ME OFF haha! There is nothing worse for me than watching an enjoyable episode of Lost, only to IMMEDIATELY get a million comments from people going “BUT WHAT ABOUT ANSWERS!?!?!?!” especially when they DID answer things within the show. The answer junkies seem to want Damon and Carlton to basically get in front of a camera and read off a list of answers – what the hell kind of fun is that? They SHOW they don’t TELL and that is what makes Lost so amazing.
I also would have voted for The Haters that claim to hate the show as a whole and yet still watch it every week just to bitch about it. I mean…srsly. What is the point? It’s like their sole purpose is to rain on our parades.
When you watch a Lost episode, are you enjoying the show or constantly just coming up stuff for your recaps? – Soile
I do enjoy the show as much as I can, but yes, most of what I am thinking about is how I am going to be able to make it funny. I watch each episode at least twice – once during the Ongoing Lost Post I do every week on Livejournal, and then a second time, when write pages of notes. The days of me just watching Lost to watch it are long gone! I get especially worried when I’m watching if the episode is really sad or confusing because I know it’s going to be that much harder to recap! It’s one thing to understand what’s going on inside your own head, but understanding it enough to explain it to thousands of people is rough. And it’s always hard trying to make fun of people having very deep ~*emotions*~.
i totally would have had a question. i didn’t know we could ask you questions.
if you could magic power one show to have another season–would you go with Lost or BSG?
i love me some Lost but i have sooooo much confidence in how it will end. and i still miss bsg all the time. ARMS and giaus and kara’s complex love life and the small powerful ways that they made a totally fictional place seem so REAL. god i miss that show ;__;
OMG!! True Blood recaps pleeeeeease!! My second favorite show after LOST! Well, tied for second with The Office, anyway!
I’m sorry you got laid off! If I were independently wealthy, I’d hire you just to write recaps of my favorite shows. But alas, that status is apparently not in the cards for me…
Thanks for answering my question! I totally agree with you about favorite Lost characters (Ben has grown on me a lot this season), your least favorite Lost fan-type and many of your other opinions. One of my online friends recently posted on Facebook that he’d watched last week’s episode after quitting watching the show midway through the second season. He pronounced the show “a steaming pile of excrement.” He made me want to punch him, and I’m a grown woman who doesn’t punch people.
Thanks for the ANSWERS! Ha.
2 things –
1. I have the biggest dorkiest crush on Neville Longbottom. Love him!
2. Word to Joss Wheadon. I mean, come on! He killed that one really popular Buffy character with, like, 1/2 an hour left in the entire series! (Keeping it spoiler free for those who are 10 years behind the times.)
Oh, Ack, here’s sending out great job wishes for you — that Doc Jensen and Vozzek read this blog, decide you’re awesome, and pass the word to someone like B.J. Novak or Rainn Wilson so you can end up working as part of the comedy writing team for “The Office” or some other show.
:D thanks! <3
I want to share my love of Neville Longbottom with you! He and Luna Lovegood are my two absolutely favorite characters and I was simply ecstatic about the build-up of Neville’s importance to the whole story and what a sweet, funny awesome badass plant lover he became. just had to share!! :D

THIS. THIS SO SO MUCH.
Wow, I think I’m in love with you now.
A Confederacy of Dunces is just the funniest book. And you love BSG, 30 Rock and Arrested Development. You’re perfect!
Oh those answer people. I watch the show with some of those people. It seems like every episode I have to pause the show and demand that they specifically tell me which answers they want. They’re just randomly getting angry, “where are the answers?” Ugh.
Ack, love the recaps of course. I gave up doing my own a while ago because barely anybody read them :( anyway, would you agree that Fox dropping Arrested Development will go down as one of the worst blunders in tv history? And are you as surprised as I am that no other network picked it up?
Please, pretty please – True Blood?
OMG PLEASE RECAP True Blood! It’s only on for like 3 months anywayyzz so it wouldn’t be as long as LOST is! I need ur recaps! They ROCK!
I LOVE your Lost recaps and would love to see you do True Blood as well! Please consider it!
Thanks for asking my question :) I’ve always wondered it and now I had the chance to ask.
True blood recaps. Yes please. x)
Great post, I enjoyed reading it!
we have a lot of answer junkies at work! those are the worst!
the other ones I don’t like are the ones that go on and on like they “KNOW” stuff, but they just watch the show week to week, one time, and don’t read any recaps or follow up…
maybe I am just bitter though because they spend less time on thinking about the show and I am stilll just as confused as they are! lol
“also would have voted for The Haters that claim to hate the show as a whole and yet still watch it every week just to bitch about it”
I hate this! one of the guys at work is like this… he’s always just like “I dunno, I didn’t really like it… it was better the first season”
it’s like, if you don’t like it, stop watching!
I LOVE Confederacy of Dunces. You have the best taste ever. Thanks for all of your hard work on the LOST recaps and good luck finding a new job!
Confederacy of Dunces is one of the most hilarious books I’ve ever read. I thought I had heard a few years back that someone in Hollywood bought the rights & that Drew Barrymore was going to be cast in it. Wouldn’t that be something!
Anyway, great site, great recaps, great everything & best of luck in the job market. Anyone with half a brain should hire you immediately!
“Don’t tell me what I can’t shampoo”!!!

Great post, I enjoyed reading it!
Ack, you are so fun!
P.S. I love Neville Longbottom, too.
