Lost’s Mysteries and Unanswered Questions

February 2nd, 2010 § 31

Lost is like one gigantic puzzle; each week a few of our questions are answered, but new questions are always being raised. There was a time when we didn’t know how Locke ended up in a wheelchair, or what was in the hatch. There was also a time when time travel wasn’t a piece of the puzzle. But now, at the beginning of the end (sigh), what are the questions that need to be answered before the series finale? I’ve compiled a list of my most burning questions, and some not-so-burning questions that I’d love to find out answers to nonetheless.

In no particular order…

    Need-to-Knows

  • What is the deal with Jacob and his enemy? Why did Jacob visit each of the Losties in their pasts? How did the enemy impersonate Locke? Why did Jacob write his lists? And what the hell did he mean when he said “It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress?”
  • What’s the deal with the Smoke Monster? Is it sentient? Does someone control it? What’s its purpose? Is it the cause of all the creepy hallucinations on The Island?
  • What’s the deal with Richard? Why doesn’t he age, and how long has he been on The Island?
  • What’s the deal with Ilana and her people?
  • What’s the deal with Christian? Is that really him on The Island, hanging out with Claire and/or Sun and Frank?
  • Is Ben essentially good or evil? What happened to him when Richard brought him to The Temple as a child?
  • Is the inability of women to give birth on The Island due to the Incident?
  • How does the Black Rock fit into the picture? What’s its significance?
  • What are the whispers in the jungle?
  • What’s the magnetic anomaly that created the Hot Pocket of energy inside The Island? Does the anomaly give The Island its magical healing powers?
  • How does the Frozen Donkey Wheel work? Who put it there?
  • Why Locke? Is he really a Chosen One, or just a pawn in some kind of game he never knew anything about? How/why did Abaddon suggest the Walkabout to Locke?
  • Why did the Hostiles decide to wipe out the Dharma Initiative?
  • Who built the 4-toed statue, and when?
  • Is Hurley crazy, or is he really talking to dead people? Or is that just The Island communicating with him somehow, like Mr. Eko and Yemi?
  • How is it that each of the Losties were somehow connected to one another in their pre-Island lives?
    Nice-to-knows:

  • What did The Others want with Walt? What makes him “special?”
  • Was there really a “sickness” on The Island? Is this what sent Danielle’s team to Crazytown?
  • What about Libby? What’s her story?

  • What happened to Desmond when the hatch imploded? Was he really sent back in time? And how did that make him psychic? Did Widmore know what was going to happen to Desmond?
  • What happened to Ben’s childhood friend Annie?
  • Who are the “Adam and Eve” the Losties found in the caves?
  • How come Patchy was so hard to kill?
  • How’d Hurley get his nickname?
  • Do the Numbers actually mean anything? Or were they just a coincidence?
  • What was all that “Magic Box” stuff Ben was talking about?
  • How did Desmond end up in military prison?
  • Who is Alvar Hanso? What’s his deal?

What are YOUR most burning questions, dear readers?

Did the H-bomb turn back time!?
Will anyone remember the crash if the bomb DID turn back time!?
Will the Losties live happily ever after!?
Will Jack ever stop crying!?

FIND OUT TONIGHT! ON THE FINAL SEASON OF LOST!!!!!!!!

These are my questions!! Also, where are Shannon’s inhalers? jk jk :)

  • Ack says:

Hahahaha!! I also want to know if it’s purgatory!!!

    I kid, I kid.

  • jewel says:

i THINK DES ENDED UP IN PRISON WHEN HE KINDA WENT CRAZY WITH ALL THE TIME TRAVEL STUFF RE: THE CONSTANT HE WAS STILL IN THE MILITARY BUT WAS GETTING IN TROUBLE FOR NOT ” FOLLWING ORDERS”

  • Alex says:

I think Danielle’s teams’ ‘sickness’ was caused by the smoke monster after they went down into that hole and Montand lost his arm. Her baby daddy came back and tried to kill her.

  • Jacob says:

Hey Ack, I don’t know if you’ve ever seen this site, but it’s a pretty good catalog of questions/answers listed per episode. http://lostqanda.blogspot.com

  • Jacob says:

Hey Ack, I don’t know if you’ve ever seen this site, but it’s a pretty good catalog of questions/answers listed per episode. I don’t think that it’s letting me post a link, so I put it in the website field. Click on my name, i guess?

  • Lauren M says:

You pretty much hit the nail on the head Ack. About Ben’s childhood friend Annie, I’m convinced she died and her death was the final straw in Ben becoming the man he is because let’s face it, it’s not Lost unless Ben is suffering.

  • The D says:

Alvar Hanso is the money man behind the Hanso foundation which was started by the DeGroots. Alvar Hanso meet John DeGroot while at college at Michigan in Ann Arbor. The DeGroots started the Darma Initiative.

  • LithiumRox says:

ooh, these are all great questions, but I have 1 more to add to the “nice to know” list…and that’s Aaron.
They seemed to think he was special…and Very Bad Things would happen if anyone but Claire raised him…so what’s that all about? What’s special about him? What will/won’t happen if he is Raised By Another? Did Kate raising him for 3 years set off the Very Bad Things or is there still time to fix things if he & Claire are reunited?

…or maybe Aaron’s not special at all other than being an especially adorable Tiny Blonde. Either way, it’d be nice to know.

  • Ack says:

@The D – I know all this about Alvar Hanso, but I still feel like there is something else up with him. That weird little shot of him in the Orientation video from so far away has always creeped me out!

@LithiumRox – you are totally right, Aaron is still a great big question mark! I wonder if time turns back, will Claire give him up for adoption in LA?

  • snoop says:

To some of those, I have some logical solutions:

    Will Jack ever stop crying!?
No! Never! How dare you insinuate such a thing? :P

What was all that “Magic Box” stuff Ben was talking about?
He was speaking metaphorically, to play on the gullible nature of then John Locke.

Do the Numbers actually mean anything? Or were they just a coincidence?
The numbers are from some sort of doom-and gloom, end of the world equation. Dharma came to the island to see if they could alter the equation. There’s probably more to it.

How come Patchy was so hard to kill?
Coz he was a typical Hollywood bad dude, these are hard to kill and pop back every once in a while so that they can be defeated again.

What happened to Ben’s childhood friend Annie?
Ben killed her, directly or indirectly, he always seems be doing that.

Will the Losties live happily ever after!?
No, definitely not, it would be too cliche. Most of them must die, unexpectedly. The rest must live in eternal misery.

Was there really a “sickness” on The Island? Is this what sent Danielle’s team to Crazytown?
The sickness was due to smoke monster infestation. Sadly, there’s no exterminators you can call for this.

What did The Others want with Walt? What makes him “special?”
His ability to make Harold Perrineau go “WAAAAAALLLLLLLLLTTTTT” every episode.

How is it that each of the Losties were somehow connected to one another in their pre-Island lives?
    a) It would make for much less interesting flashbacks if they weren’t, and
    b) Plot-wise, it’s due to Jacob. And his loop (not a euphemism).

Who built the 4-toed statue, and when?
Same folks who made the painting underneath the temple, where Ben got scared straight by Smokie.

Why did the Hostiles decide to wipe out the Dharma Initiative?
Coz Dharma were gonna fuck up the Island with all their experimentation.

How does the Frozen Donkey Wheel work? Who put it there?
Like an automatic gearbox. It has park, drive, neutral, reverse, and overdrive. When Ben left the island, he forgot to put it back on park from drive, which cause it to go into overdrive. No idea who put it there, maybe some boat captain?

How does the Black Rock fit into the picture? What’s its significance?
Brought to the island by Jacob, and also where Alpert originated from. Transporting eyeliner in cargo bay.

Is Ben essentially good or evil?
Both, he has shown moments where he can be both. He is a cold, calculating, manipulative machine, with daddy issues.

That’s about all I got. I suspect some of those will never be answered. We’re probably meant to just go along with them coz they were convenient at the time they were exposed on the show.

  • Lou says:

Most important question of all time…why is Sayid so badass?

  • Felice says:

    Possible answers:
-The Hostiles killed the Dharma just ’cause. They didn’t like them. I don’t think we’ll get more of an answer than that.
-As it stands, it seems like Locke was never special at all. He was just a silly pawn like anyone else. A useful tool for nameless dude. And that’s why it’s sad. But Abbadon fitting into it is totally a burning question for me!
-You know how all the Frenchies except Danielle went down in that hole to get Montand? I think that the people who came out weren’t them. They were like Christian. She could tell something was up with them, but she thought they were sick, not realizing they were zombies/smoke monster. So maybe there isn’t any sickness.

But I need to know the ancient stuff, like the temple and the donkey wheel and the statue, etc!!!

  • Lauren M says:

I agree with lithiumrox about Aaron, I read in a people article that they’re going to look into that, yay!

  • JR says:

    Ha ha, all of those are need-to-knows for me. I hate it when they leave things up in the air for you to decide. I NEED THE TRUUUUUUUUTH!!! ;_____;

  • Ash says:

As an addendum to “Who built the 4-toed statue, and when?”, I’d be curious to know how (and when) it got knocked down!

  • Dan says:

I think the black smoke is Jacob’s enemy (??Esau??) Esau was definitely taking the form of Locke who knew where to find the black smoke for Ben. Notice how Locke conveniently is out of the picture when the black smoke appears (after Ben falls down below the temple). I also think that Esau was taking the form of Christian Shepard whenever he appears, but I don’t know about that last one

  • l0nepinemall says:

Great list! Although I feel like the Libby story line is a Need-to-Know. She clearly was important and I’d like to know why!

  • Henry says:

    1. How the heck did the Black Rock get all the way up ON the island?

    2. Who is truly “bad” — Widmore or Ben?

    3. Is there a larger force/set of forces controlling both Widmore and Ben?

    4. What is the connection between Mr. Kwon and Charles Widmore?

    5. Was the Island originally inhabited by Egyptians?

    6. What the heck is the Valenzetti Equation?

    7. Why did the statue have only four toes?

    8. Is destiny mutable?

  • Henry says:

    Oh, and some more…

    1. Has Ben lived through “time loops” of these events before, thus enabling him to be eerily prepared when the event cycles back again? I mean, who apparently randomly leaves a tin box with Saltines and a mirror and then JUST WHEN HE NEEDS IT, it’s there?

    2. Has Eloise also experienced “time loops,” as her convo with Desmond in the jewelry store would seem to imply?

    3. How many times have these events happened?

  • Anonymous says:

Relating to the subject of Annie, I’d like to know if Ben is a virgin.

  • liztish481788 says:

Maybe I’m completely blanking and this was already answered, but I’m DYING to know how Locke’s dad ended up on the island! I feel like they just abandoned that whole issue completely.

  • heatherbird says:

Why is the island somehow linked to the desert of Tunisia? (Charlotte was working there, Locke appeared there after he turned the donkeywheel)

  • Christine says:

LOL,, Anonymous at 6:33! You are my new favourite person! (and not the only person to seriously wonder that).

  • LithiumRox says:

    Best line from the premiere:
“I’m sorry you had to see me like that”

  • […] Lost’s Mysteries and Unanswered Questions […]

  • Teleholic says:

What were the writers on when they decided Nikki and Paulo might be a good idea?

  • DC says:

Nikki & Paulo’s episode was like a loud proclamation of “Yeah, there are other people from the crash — here’s why we don’t care about them.” LOL! I kept thinking the paralyzing spider bite thing would come in somewhere, but alas, it never did.

WOW just watched the premiere and can I just say, without spoiling, I CALLED IT! I feel vindicated and so pleased with the current “course correction” — and now we know what was really going on with the whole Charlie subplot. Lost, I heart you!

But we better find out who the flip Adam and Eve were over at the rape caves as Shannon called them, and what happened to Annie!

  • Malakhai says:

And what the hell did he mean when he said “It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress?”

I think this is about the Apocalypse, and dividing up souls at the end of the world. How many of them are on Jacob’s side and how many are on his enemy’s side? Did more people follow free will or did they feel they were destined to do what they did?
