Submit your questions for the Lost Encyclopedia Authors!

May 25th, 2010 § 103

Some of you may have already heard – on August 16, 2010 DK Publishing will be releasing The Lost Encyclopedia!!!!

From the publisher:

Featuring more than 400 pages and over 1500 images, the LOST Encyclopedia will be a comprehensive guide to the characters, items, locations, plotlines, relationships, and mythologies from all six seasons of the landmark series aired on ABC-TV and produced by ABC Studios. Created in full collaboration with ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios, this will be the first and only fully licensed and comprehensive reference to all things LOST, and it includes a foreword by executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.

Cool, right!? Even cooler? I’ll be giving away three copies of the book when it’s released – details coming later this summer! Even MORE COOLER?? I’m doing a Q & A with the authors Tara Bennett and Paul Terry tomorrow!!! I’ve already got some questions for them, but I thought it would be fun if you guys wanted to submit some questions too. I can’t ask them all, but I’ll choose my favorites to include in the interview!

If you’d like to submit a question, leave it as a comment here. If you’d like me to use your real name (or your first name, last initial) make sure you include that, otherwise I’ll use your screen names.

P.S. You should be asking questions about the book and how they wrote it and the authors themselves, not so much unanswered questions from the show…I doubt they know the answers!

  • Dawn says:

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why would Sayid, even though the Island and the time he spent there is the most significant in his life and he is, therefore, floating in the ether with the Losties, end up with Shannon as opposed to his lifelong love, Nadia?

  • Molly Shackleton says:

    Hey Ack!

    Congrats on your interview coup!

I have a question I would love to have answered:
    Why was Walt so “special”?

    Thanks for the opportunity! :)

  • Malakhai says:

Ask them what was the one mystery they wanted to see solved, but it was never answered?

  • Dawn says:

Oh, haha, nevermind my question. Movieline answered it already:

“How is Shannon Sayid’s true love, and not Nadia, the soulmate he’s been chasing across time/space for six seasons?
    Scheduling conflict?”

  • sylvanscion says:

Ooh! Did they get to work directly with Damon and Carlton and any of the actors, while writing the book? Did they get their own burning questions answered?

  • Jason P says:

How long has this been in the works and what was the most difficult piece of the Lost world to include in the book?

  • Mariela Rodriguez says:

Congrats on the amazing oportunity Ack!!!
My question would be:If we are right, and the flashsideways was a “meeting point” between the losties real life and the after life:How did Roger Linus knew aboutb the island and the Dharma Iniciative?
If that is a question you think you can´t(or shouldnt)ask then my question would be:Why leaving MIB nameless?
They (DL & CC) said that he had a name and the name had great significance but they didn´t say it in the end (we just have what Kristin heard, which we can´t be sure of)
So why make it a big deal and not reveal it?Or is it going to be explained on the DVD/Blue ray?

PS:Sorry if I don´t make much sense,I´m way to excited thinking our questions may be answered so my mind is a mess right now…

  • Greytune says:

Was there anything special about the numbers or were they just random?

(I’m still obsessed with them. FUCK.)

  • skfprincess9 says:

What happened to David? That’s the one thing I can’t figure out…

  • Pippin says:

I’m so buying that book! :D

  • nc00 says:

In the final scenes, when Christian said “You needed them and they needed you”, does he mean that Jack was lost and found himself in his relationships on the island, or is he saying that Jack was lost and his relationships on the island are what made it possible for him to find himself?

(i.e. Is the thesis of the show that everyone goes on a journey together, or is it that everyone goes on their own journey, but their friends help show them the way? I feel like the last scene could have been taken either way, they all needed each other to start, but it seems like they were all going different places.)

  • TheGhostOfFrankLapidus'Beard says:

Hey Ack!! So excited for your opportunity and that you’re sharing it with your fans!! I’d like to know how Jacob was able to leave the island.

Love you, love your show! :-)

  • w says:

Will the book offer up answers that weren’t explained on the show? (ie the other outrigger)

I know they worked with Gregg Nations on the book, but what about the other Lost writers?

Was the book already mostly written before the finale? Are they going to have to revisit quite a few of the articles now that the show is finished?

There may not be maps in the book, but what about timelines?

    -Laurie W.

  • Wifi says:

Are they going to crib from Lostpedia or what? Did Damon and Carlton? I bet they did at least once or twice.

Would they call Lost the first “wiki” show, i.e. show that requires a wiki to keep track of everything? Could you have done a show like this before fans could easily get together and obsess and archive information?

  • esme says:

did the smoke monster really have the power to give people what they wanted if they helped him?

  • maureen says:

Will the book include any maps of the island? Not just Danielle’s map but a map with locations marked, for example the barracks, the Dharma stations, and hydra island.

Will it include an accurate timeline of what we have seen on the island?

Is the book going to contain any other canonical “TPTB approved” answers/facts that the writers may not have had time to include in the show? Or is the book going to be more fan based with discussions of the relative merit of various fan theories?

Did Gregg Nations allow you access to his notebook of all things Lost?

  • lioninlambsclothing says:

I don’t have a question… but as far as the Sayid/Nadia thing goes I thought about it a lot before because I had it in my head when the smoke monster was making his promises that maybe it would end up being Shannon.

I think we can take it quite literally that “the island was the most important time in their lives”

but I think what Nadia represented was an ideal and something that was part of a Sayid that was not fully resolved. Remember, when he was off the island he DID get to be with Nadia, and she was killed. But maybe that is not really his true love because she represented something that was more a part of him being unresolved than resolved.

Maybe his love with Shannon was more pure?

That or it just made for a more dramatic ending, lol!

    Still I loved it!

  • Daphne1D says:

How did Locke’s dad get to the island via that box?

Why did Claire need to raise Aaron?

Who was Jacob & the MIB’s crazy fake mom and how did she end up on the island? Was she a smoke monster too?

Why was Daniel crying when he was watching the footage of the plane crash?

What’s up with the temple and the statue? Who built them?

Why is Tunisa the Island’s Exit Point?

I think that’s it for now!
(you know my real name and last initial, please feel free to use them!) :)

  • AgnieszkaZ says:

Why was Sawyer number 15 and Kate number 51, (and throughout the whole season there was the “mirror thing” underlined, at least I got the impression – oh, but you can skip it, Ack :P) if they never addressed it? Was there any importance to those numbers at all?

(I just need to vent my anger at them ignoring my OTP of all time in such a brutal, cruel, sadistic way.)

  • Andrew Wooding says:

Q: Has the ending of the show changed how you were going to approach the writing of the book and what are your opinions on it?

Q: Will you be including non show related topics in the encyclopedia, such as the numerous books that have been mentioned, the philosophers that have had characters named after and how they lead to a greater understanding of the show?

Q: Will there be an analysis on each individual episode and it’s workings or just seasons as a whole?

  • Andrew Wooding says:

Ooo, just saw a question above mine, a map of the island would be amazing, please ask that one, haha.

  • brad says:

Another vote for what “GhostofFrank…” said. How was Jacob able to leave the island and meet/touch the candidates? (he never even believed there was anything else out there)

Thanks…and it is terrific that you are getting this opportunity. Good for you, girl.

  • Ceri says:

Sweet! Questions for the writers of the book:
    1. What are your top 3 questions that you would like to ask and have answers for
    2. If you were a lost character who do you relate yourself to and why
    3. How many hours over the last 6 years have you spent on this show
    4. What are you going to do to fill your time now?
    5. If you were to create a spin off show, who would be in it and what would it foucus on

my name is my Screen name with the last name starting with H.

  • brad says:

    okay…a couple more…

How did the “flashes” on the island transport the Losties (and “only” people like Sawyer, Juliette, Jin, Miles) back to the 70’s? AND>>> how did Jack, Kate, Sayid and Hurley end up in that era (wasn’t it 3 years later??) I am getting myself confused on this now. ;-) Regardless…curious as to how the island bounced only the main cast figures to different time periods.

  • w says:

Tara Bennett said in a previous interview that there wouldn’t be any maps.

  • LostTeaParty says:

At the shows inception, many of the characters developed or evolved due to the uniqueness and charisma of those brought in. (ex: Jorge G., Josh H. & Michael E.) Were future parts cast to fit a role or vice versa?

When did you realize that you were crossing over into super-fan, how did people close to you react to your new found obsession?

Who was the most challenging person to interview that you really needed to include?

  • Peter says:

Im so jealous of you for getting this opportunity :) – Q: Did you find that writing the encyclopedia helped/hindered your overall enjoyment of watching and understanding the show? – Peter Hunt

  • Layne says:

That’s awesome. I can’t wait for their answers and the book.
    I have a few questions:
Cast and crew pictures will obviously be included (right?), but will there be artwork? such as ads, original drawings like the dharma logos, fan artwork.
Will the book cover the things the show alluded to, such as books, music, names of scientists and philosophers?
Will it list the music played and books read in each episode?
How long is the book? how much is it going to cost?

  • Tiffany says:

Will we get a complete timeline of EVERYTHING that happened on the show, along with notes? It would take up a large chunk, but it’s what I need.

  • technoprep says:

A LOST Encyclopedia! How perfect! One simple question: in the very first scene of the Pilot, why was Ben’s baton lying next to Jack’s head in the bamboo forest? I noticed it was not there in the End.

Here are links to the screen caps:
    In the Pilot
    In the End

What is the significance of Mr. Ecko’s story in the island if he’s a no-show at the end? I’m also including Walt in this question. I want to know what happened to the people that got off the island (Sawyer, Kate, Squirrel, etc..)afterwards until the day they died and when did they all died. I’m assuming Jack was the last one that died coz they were all waiting for him..I think.

  • Arcadia says:

I’m wondering how they’re going about this. Do they have a system for cataloging the mysteries and meaningful props and characters with one line, etc? Did they use the bible, go through each episode, use Lostpedia, etc?

  • Amanda says:

If the MIB couldn’t leave the Island, but was inhabiting Christian’s body, how did Christian appear to Jack in the hospital and Michael on the freighter?

  • Nick D says:

Here is the only question I can think of: How many times have you watched each season in its entirety? I lost track after 15 for the 1st season myself. Or kind of the same question, but better phrased: How many hours of Lost have you watched, including repeat viewings, specials and the same.

  • James McDonald says:

What did happen to Hurley, Ben, Desmond, Rose and Bernard on the island and those on the plane Frank, Miles, Richard, Claire, Kate and Sawyer? Is their another story here?
If it were possible, could they make a spin-off, tv-movie, or motion picture in the near future?

  • Wayne Wong says:

How was Christian Shephard able to appear in L.A. and on the freighter. IF MIB only takes the form of someone known to the person, how could he appear to Locke at the donkey wheel and to Micheal on the freighter?

  • brad says:

I lied… more questions. ha. Was reading another article and they did have some nice questions I thought I’d share. Some relate to what I’ve already asked.but..

If exposure to the radiation in the well turned the Man in Black into the smoke monster, why didn’t it do the same to Jack?)

Who built the temple or what made its life-saving pool work, or how Jacob’s lighthouse could
see people all over the world, or how he and various Others seemed able to travel from the island to anywhere else in the world at will,
or who built the structures in the well of light, or why the island could move through time and space, or how many centuries Jacob and
Smokey had been playing their game of cosmic backgammon.

  • erika says:

why weren’t frank, miles, and richard in the church at the end of the series finale episode? why didn’t they take daniel with them?

  • Keeks says:

I took the church scene to be “Jack’s people” — the ones who meant the most to him. But I would also like to know how Jacob traveled to and from the island, how could he leave the light unattended? And how did Christian appear on the mainland if MIB couldn’t leave? And MIB couldn’t leave, but he could go to that other island? I thought we were told he couldn’t cross the water!

  • jewel says:

imo: re: christian… I think that it really was the same christian we saw at the end of the show.. the real “ghost” of christian. ( just like hurley saw charlie )…but, on the island and by the donkey wheel it was the mib… just not sure of the freighter?

  • Desmondismyconstant says:

maybe some of these questions……. :]

(these people probably don’t watch lost intently because some were answered, but some are still kinda confusing.)

and my personal question (i forget if its in there or not, and someone might have asked this already):

    why was walt special?

  • RobinAnn says:

Here’s my question for Bennett and Terry: At what point in the televised series did you decide: “Hey, we should definitely make a Lost Encyclopedia!” At what point did you decide the show was genius and needed to be documented?
For that matter, Rachel, when did you decide to start recap-ing?

  • Emily says:

What did happen to Hurley, Ben, Desmond, Rose and Bernard on the island and those on the plane Frank, Miles, Richard, Claire, Kate and Sawyer? Is their another story here?
If it were possible, could they make a spin-off, tv-movie, or motion picture in the near future?

  • Your blog is really cool to me and your topics are very relevant. I was browsing around and came across something you might find interesting. I was guilty of 3 of them with my sites. “99% of site owners are committing these five mistakes”. You will be suprised how simple they are to fix.

  • First, as indicated in the security advisory, we recommend keeping Microsoft software updated.

  • Stacey says:

I like what you guys are usually up too. This
kind of clever work and reporting! Keep up the very good works guys I’ve you guys to my personal blogroll.
