SPOILER ALERT: Mini-Recap & Discussion Post for “The Candidate”

May 4th, 2010 § 109

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE LATEST EPISODE OF LOST.

After the jump: Mini-recap, questions, theories, and predictions!

P.S. Just saw on DarkUFO that the series finale will be 2.5 hours now. Damn, son. That’s like half a Lord of the Rings movie.

You guys I am almost too depressed to write this recap right now BUT I WILL MUDDLE THROUGH.

In the Sideways World, Jack told Locke that he was a candidate for a new surgery that might help Locke walk again, but Locke refused! Intrigued/obsessed by this, Jack went on a wild goose chase trying to figure out why this dude wouldn’t want to help himself. Along the way he met Locke’s dentist Bernard, who figured out he was also on the plane with Jack and Locke. Bernard told Jack that the accident that paralyzed Locke involved another man – one Anthony Cooper. Jack tracked him down, and instead of being the asshole we all knew and loved hated, Cooper was a drooling vegetable! Turns out a few years ago Locke took his daddy for a spin in a private plane, which inexplicably crashed, leaving Locke unable to walk and his father unable to function at all. So now Locke won’t get the surgery to help himself because of – big surprise – daddy issues. Also, Jack and Claire met up again, and it turns out Christian left Claire a music box, but neither Jack nor Claire have any idea what it means.

On the island, all the Losties minus Jack and Claire were captured by Widmore’s lackies and thrown into the polar bear cages for all of 5 minutes before Smokey swooped in, killing said lackies, which allowed Jack to set everyone free. When the now reunited group finally made it to the Ajira plane, Smokey quickly realized that the plane was rigged with explosives! So he took some of the C4 for safekeeping and told everyone they’d have to take the sub instead. On the way to the dock, Sawyer and Jack hatched a plan in which Jack wouldn’t be joining everyone on the sub so he could stay on the island, but he would help to incapacitate Smokey so he also couldn’t come for the ride. The only problem with that plan was that Smokey suspected it all along! Suddenly Kate was shot by one of Widmore’s lackies, Jack brought her on the sub to save her, and thanks to Smokey’s old switcheroo, he also carried a backpack full of explosives onto the sub, which everyone quickly realized. Sayid, finally showing some emotion, ran to the opposite end of the now submerged sub with the bomb, where he was blown to smithereens. The sub began to sink, Lapidus was knocked out by debris, Sun was pinned to the wall, and Jin said he’d never leave her again, so they all drowned!!! Jack saved Sawyer’s life, and Hurley saved Kate, and then everyone sat on the beach crying forever, much like the entire audience. Smokey said he had to finish the job of killing everyone, and Claire followed behind.

Questions:

1. How did Locke have the dream about the button??

2. So now Jack is starting to see how Claire, Bernard, Locke, etc were all on the plane – what the hell does this mean?

3. Why was the plane rigged with bombs? Did Widmore really want to kill all the Losties, or were they just meant for Mocke? And if Mocke’s plan all along was to kill everyone, why didn’t he just let them on the plane?

4. What is Widmore doing with the list of candidates? Is he really on Team Jacob or what?

5. When Sayid said “Jack, it’s going to be you” what did that mean? If it means Jack is the final candidate, how would Sayid have known that? Did Desmond tell him something? Did Desmond see the future when he was blasted a few episodes ago?

6. What significance does the music box Christian left for Claire have? Did you notice it was playing “Catch a Falling Star?” I’m still convinced Christian has a very important role in all this.

7. How come Kate’s not a candidate?

8. Will Sideways Sawyer still kill Anthony Cooper, even though he’s a vegetable?

9. Where are Richard, Miles, and Ben?

Thoughts:

;______________________________________________;

RIP Sayid, even if you’ve been a zombie psycho killer for the last season we will remember you for your torcha scrunchie and mad MacGuyver skillz.
RIP Lapidus, I hope there is bacon and infinite maragaritas in heaven.
RIP Sun, I wish you would have had a better part for the last 2 years on this show. I’m sorry your daughter is an orphan now. I’m sorry they waited forever to reunite you with Jin, only to kill you both off immediately.
RIP Jin, I don’t even know what to say. That was like the saddest thing ever. Slo-mo drowning deaths are the worst. I JUST DON’T EVEN KNOW YOU GUYS. ;_;

BRB CRYING FOREVER. :(

That’s it. Me and Smokey are done professionally. Claire too.

We had Jears but I’m going to allow them considering we were all crying too. Seeing Hurley cry like that made me want to die, pretty much.

Next week is going to be INSANELY EPIC. Hold onto your butts, people. It’s really almost over!

  • Signature One-Punch Knockout says:

Ack, I’ve loved your recaps since Day 1, but can Jack can get a free pass on his end-of-episode Jears this time? They were deserved and righteous at least. Oh my god I won’t even be able to get to sleep tonight. I don’t think Hurley cried this hard even over Charlie.

    Just OMG.

  • JStephane says:

    Wow. Just, oh man.

  • mellow says:

    Jin, Sun. :( Hurley sobbing.

ack you really should do a season 4 finale jin/C4 reference. :D :D

  • Signature One-Punch Knockout says:

PS – It also just goes to show you, when confronted with a bomb, both Jack and Sawyer will eff everyone over and only Sayid will know what to do.

It was like an ethnic cleansing tonight. And they’re already fridging like every woman except Kate. Horrible.

  • meghan says:

yeah, this episode killed me. you’re done with smokey and claire? i am done with lost professionally

  • Ack says:

I did say I’d allow the Jears since we were all crying just as hard!

I am still in shock from all this, I am legitimately depressed!

  • Kait says:

i am soulless and do not cry over tv…but i almost did. that was heart breaking, gut wrenching. some shit went down tonight! that was seriously one of the most actiony episodes EVER. so. much. to. process.

but somehow i’m more confused :’D

  • hutch says:

    FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY-HEEEEEEEEEEEEE!@!!!!!@!$!@%O@!!!!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Devon says:

    Jears TO THE EXTREME!!!
Holy crap. I was kinda out of it for awhile now I’m just now thinking of these deaths..*deep breath* I need another episode..now plz.

  • Ack says:

Way to break the page Hutch!!!!!!!!

;_; I AM SO SAD ABOUT THIS EPISODE.

  • Nikki says:

It was like watching Charlie die all over again..Thanks LOST for thoroughly depressing me :(

I write my own recap each week and it was hard to remember anything else other than feeling so sad.

    Hurley CRIED :(((

  • jewel says:

    wow :(

  • John says:

He has to rig the bomb so that they could end up using it to kill each other. Thats his thing. Prove to Jacob that humans are naturally evil and would end up killing each other every time.

I bet the dual look in the mirror with Jack and Claire has some signifigance.

  • Signature One-Punch Knockout says:

LOL I see it now, my own eyes were Jearsing so much I couldn’t read properly.

  • LostMeToo says:

I didn’t think I could be more sad than Charlie’s death, but this was double that emotion. Wow. I’m just devastated. Not Sun and Jin. Sayid…saves the day post-Zombie mode. Wow. I can’t speak/type any more…

  • tbirdy says:

Yes the Jears were earned tonight. Hurley’s sobbing almost made me cry, too.

  • Princess says:

Sayid seems to have gotten redemption at the end. But I’m so sad to see him go. And Jin and Sun! That was heartbreaking.

I’m so bummed about this episode that I think I’ll wear black tomorrow. :(

My only laugh came from all the people who kept shooting at Mocke. I decided he has Moobs of Steel.

  • Laura says:

Hell yeah to Desmond running down Locke. I am done with him forever. Did anyone else think Bernard knew way more than he was letting on? How can we be sure Bernard and Rose aren’t still hanging out on the island? I think they will play a crucial part when no one is expecting it.
Jin and Sun=new standard of love.

  • Susan says:

SOMEONE at my house was yapping about something else during the last few minutes, and since I couldn’t hear what was said, I was pretty sure Sawyer was dead when the show ended.
So considering what I was expecting, not such a bad turnout after all. The Sun/Jin thing was a little too “Jack and Rose” for my taste, but the cheesiness kept it from being too hardcore emotional. Donkey crying in front of the fam would be a bad thing and frightening for my children.
Still, in the larger scheme of things, what an awful story arc for Sayid. Heroic, yes, but why the zombie thing? ALSO – where’s Ben? I’m afraid the next time he shows up will be the last time we see him. It’s looking like our beloved bad guys will have to sacrifice themselves a la Sayid.
Thanks as always, Ack for these recaps. Funny, but when I thought Sawyer was dead, I immediately thought about you and expected the site to be wearing the internet equivalent of a black arm band.

  • Ack says:

@Susan, if Sawyer would have died I wouldn’t have even been able to post LOL I’d have been threatening to jump off a tall building somewhere.

    Just kidding.

    Not really. lol

  • Ack says:

    @Princess Moobs of Steel = A+++

  • Ashley says:

In all the sadness, I didn’t realize Lapidus died too! :'(
Now I’m triple sad (and I was already zombie!Sayid-level depressed):'( :'(

  • Eggplant Girl says:

Hey Ack, When Jack & Claire looked at their reflections together I thought “Adam & Eve!” It just hit me. I’d always thought Jack & Kate or Bernard & Rose before. I can’t believe you let Jack off the hook for his Jears. Never thought I’d see the day…

  • Liv says:

@Ashley–I didn’t realize that Lapenis was dead either, until someone else pointed it out to me. :'(

SAYID! You were my favorite frakking character! At least you had some redemption at the end. I’ll always love you, you crazy Iraqi torchurra. I’m pretty sure I yelled out “NOOO SAYID, DON’T DO IT!” when he grabbed the bomb and started running.

And Sun and Jin! I can’t believe they’re dead! All I could think about was poor Ji Yeon. And I frakking lost it when their hands drifted apart.

I think I actually started liking Jack in this week’s ep! Gasp! Although his sideways counterpart was totally creepy, being so damn persistent about that surgery.

I seriously got chills when Locke (and later Jack) said “I wish you would have believed me.” Like, holy shit.

Did anyone else notice, in the preview for next week’s MiB/Jacob ep, that they showed that creepy blonde kid again? I’m thinking that that /has/ to be Jacob…right??

  • kc says:

Srsly tho…can someone please tell me why Jin, Sun and LaPidus are dead while Zoe still lives?

And why the eff did no one think to mention Ji Yeon during the death scene – you think it’d have been more realistic if Sun was like “You’ve got to go home Jin – do it for Ji Yeon. Tell her I love her.”

  • Ack says:

@Eggplant Girl Ohhhhh god you think Jack and Claire are Adam and Eve??? That would be crazy but I can actually see that!

LOL I’m 100% against Jears, but when half your friends just drowned, if you don’t sit there and cry something’s wrong with you.

  • Liv says:

Also, did anyone else get totally blindsided by the revelation that Smokey actually wants to KILL the candidates, not use them to get off the island? Or was that just me?

@Eggplant Girl: holy crap, Jack and Claire as Adam and Eve would be awesome!

@Ack: sorry for spamming your page here…this episode was incredible, and no one at home is a fan of LOST, so I’ve had to suffer through this all by myself!

  • Ack says:

    @Liv spam away, this is a safe haven for depressed Lost fans LOL. ;_;

I always kind of figured Smokey was getting everyone together just to kill them, but he had me convinced when he was running towards the sub like that! Maybe he figured if he was on the sub when it exploded he’d survive anyway.

  • LostTeaParty says:

*sobbing* The HEARS really did me in

  • L says:

i too didnt realize lapidus died… :( and he only got like 2 lines the whole episode. what a wasted character- but then again he wasnt really useful. but still…miles is going to have to keep up the smart responses double time. cant believe only 3 regular episodes left before the finale…. they’re actually wrapping it up. yikes!
a LOST support group better form.

  • John says:

I have a feeling that everyone is going to die, and then regain their memories in their alternate timeline selves. That way, all these deaths aren’t as bad as they seem. I’m still optimistic about the end.

  • Sarah says:

What kills me is that Smokey has been lying this whole entire time. He didn’t Wicked Witch of the West melt in the water like I thought he would when Jack pulled him in, he was fine! So now we have the Linus-effect: go back and think of everything that Smokey has told everyone and know that the opposite is probably true.

Oh Sayid…I’m going to need the refills on your Zombutrin. I somehow have to sit through work tonight with bloodshot eyes. I’m so emo sad.

And don’t even get me started on the epicness of Sun and Jin. It was so awful, I flashed back to my 16 year old self watching Titanic. I’LL NEVER LET GO JIN. I’LL NEVER LET GO.

  • Susan says:

@ John: I totally love that idea. I’m going to hang my hat on that one for now – otherwise, things are looking awfully bleak.

  • Ack says:

@John I think that might be where they’re going with all this, but I actually hope that’s NOT the case…I still feel like the Sideways World isn’t real somehow. I feel like it’s The Matrix or something.

@Sarah I always assumed Smokey was lying, but I still liked him because he was all rational and logical and made sense, but now WE ARE DONE.

  • Sarah says:

Oh oh oh oh oh! And now Sawyer has caused more deaths in one “Incident” than Jack – I wonder how that is going to affect him. I mean, Jack only caused Juliet’s death, but Sawyer just knocked off Sayid (who just lost the “most deaths by one character award” to Patchy by one), Sun, Jin, and LaPenis in one shot. :(

  • Ack says:

    @Sarah I was actually thinking about that bomb – I bet anything it was rigged to go off whether they pulled the wires out or not. I mean it just sped it up when Sawyer pulled the wires. They were screwed no matter what ;_;

  • Sarah says:

I know what you mean, Ack, but my take is that since Flocke put the bomb together it couldn’t go off by his hands. I think the Candidates can only kill each other, so it wouldn’t have gone off if no one had pulled the wires. All I kept thinking about was Jack and Richard’s scene in the Black Rock, and that holy crow, Jack was RIGHT. It only took 6 years, 117 episodes, and a whole lot of Jears…but they finally let him be right.

(Also sorry for spamming your page. I’m stuck at work all night and reeling from this episode.)

  • Matt says:

Sayid died rather abruptly, I think. I never was a huge Sayid fan, but that was quite awful. He was the most badass character. :(

And Frank died, which I didn’t realize until later. I was beginning to really like Frank too. D:

And then Sun and Jin freaking died! The music and the whole “I’ll never leave you again” and the holding hands underwater and going apart, that just put me over the edge. That’s the closest I’ve ever come to crying at a Lost episode. I just kind of watched the TV in shock for a few minutes. What was really sad is that they JUST BARELY got reunited, and then they died.

I really want to know if Claire is going to have some sort of major role this season instead of “Hi I’m here to point out the obvious and react”. I want to see her get off the island to get to Aaron, really, cause the Claire/Aaron reunion is waaay overdue.

But I swear, if Hurley or Miles or Ben die this season, I will cry.

  • Teleholic says:

I know this is such a stupid thing to be thinking about but was anyone else pissed that Jin and Sun were speaking to each other in English? I just didn’t get it, they’re Korean! And then they died!!!!! Come on, if I was sun I would’ve been like hellooooo at least save yourself for the sake of Ji-Yeon?? Our daughter?

But yes, I’m still sobbing right now. There’s only 4 main characters left besides Smokey and Richard’s Band of Merry Men! OH MY GOD THE END IS NEAR! OH GOD SOMEONE HOLD ME!

    :”'(

  • Andrew says:

I’m trying to study for my last final of a miserably long finals week but I can’t even function! What a crazy episode. We had 3 Season 1 characters die in a matter of minutes and Lapidus. Wow. I hate to say it but I think Sawyer was wrong this time around… I hope he gets back on the wagon and follows what Jacob wants.

    Screw you Moob Man.

  • Teleholic says:

Oh my god my previous comment sounds very racist and xenophobic which I assure you I’m not. I just thought that it was weird for them to talk in English when the last time they saw each other he barely spoke it, and their native language is Korean, and they were alone, and you know what I’ll just shut up now.

  • kc says:

@Teleholic I thought it would have been more intimate if they’d spoken in Korean too. But several things really pissed me off about the Jun death scene so…

  • Barb says:

Feeling kind of numb after this. Unfortunately I was spoiled about Sun and Jin by some idiot on another site last week, but I’m sure it will sink in later. Except … it kind of felt less meaningful when we then saw Jin walking down the hospital hallway in the sideways world immediately after. Death means nothing! We have sideways world! I agree about not wanting that world to be the end.

I think Hurley crying might have been the saddest moment for me (considering the spoilage).

I don’t like that now we suddenly are reviving Jack and Kate while Sawyer barely checked on her after she was shot. Please. Inconsistent much? After Sawyer has been watching out for her these last few episodes and Jack has been all about his mission? And now it’s all Jate? Sigh.

I certainly could be tantrum-y because of the impending loss of this world, but I have no more expectations of Darlton being true to what they have shown/built for 5 1/2 years … yet I’m still going to have to be seriously careful about reading anything online these next few weeks. Whatever emotions/reactions may come, I want to come by them on my own!

P.S. And where are Richard, Ben, and Miles? I thought maybe Richard had planted the explosives on the plane, since that’s where he said he was going, right?

  • mkhall says:

A friend and I were talking about tonight’s “ethnic cleansing” and suddenly it all made sense. The Island is Arizona, and the only people who have a chance at surviving are on Jacob’s “white” side. I hope Hurley has his papers with him…

Sorry. Consider it some gallows humor after all the death tonight.

I’m still putting money on Alt-Earth being a pocket dimension, or possible an alternate universe. Our Heroes had their minds popped into their counterparts in the same way that Desmond switches minds through time. So yes, it’s still Sun and Jin there, but just a slightly different version of Sun and Jin. When the Alties “wake up,” they start to become aware of the timeline where their “Earth A” counterparts live. Maybe the Earth A personalities are actually submerged in there somewhere, which is why the small differences — an appendectomy, for example — start to get noticed.

Okay, so Sun and Jin are out of the Adam and Eve pool. Who’s for Rose and Bernard, and who’s for Sawyer and Kate? Or — excuse me while I pull this out of my, er, pocket — who’s for Charles and Eloise?

While part of me likes the idea of Hugo volunteering to stay and be the new Jacob — Hurley as Buddha — it doesn’t feel like a very good resolution to his story. No, at this point I’m pretty sure we’re stuck with Jack as the savior of mankind.

Richard will probably have to baptize the Baby Jacob (Aaron?) before he can go to his reward, and Ben will have to atone for being Judas and betraying Jacob. Miles is just collateral damage at this point, given the cavalier way they discarded poor old Frank.

But so help me, if the real Locke’s brain wakes up and uses his freshly revealed piloting skill to take that busted up jet into the air and save the day, Darlton will go on my blacklist.

    Enough ranting for now.

bye bye, jin. bye bye, sun. bye bye, sayid. i´ll always have you in my heart. i still have some hope for frank… tho i highyl doubt it. so, if you´re gone, too, bye bye then. your one-liners were almost on par with hurley´s and miles´s.

Flocke? i hope you explode in a million pieces. i hope Desmond goes Dr. Manhattan on your smokey ass.

And, Sawyer: IDIOT!!!!! IIIIIIDIOTTT!!!!!!!! It´s a shame, really, that Jack was probably right for the first time ever (for the first time form the point of view of the losties, mind you). But… well, you know. Jack´s track of being chronically wrong is always a mile ahead of him.

so, yeah, pretty much THANK YOU LOST FOR MAKING ME THIS SAD!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

now i really, absolutely need to know WHAT THE HELL DOES THE SIDEWAYS MEAN??? IS IT REALLY HAPPILY EVER AFTER?????

  • LithiumRox says:

I don’t have time to comment on everything because I have a lab practical and a final paper due tomorrow, but you mentioned Christian, which means I have to put on the broken record I’ve been playing since 2007:
Christian Shepherd and Charles Widmore. They knew each other and they’re BFFs. They just are. If it never happens Imma be upset.

(In my imagination they get drunk on ridiculously expensive booze together and joke about how they have one kid who hates them and one kid who doesn’t know they exist…but that’s just a whole different story…)

  • Lauren M says:

I can’t even begin to think of an answer to any of your questions. I’m still so depressed and angry. RIP Sun, Jin, Lapidus, Sayid. I was already bawling when Sun and Jin died but I had managed to calm down but when Hurley began crying on the beach, I lost it again. WHY? Why reunite them just to kill them? And poor poor Ji Yeon.
Sayid, you were starting to go way down on my awesomeness meter this season, you have just redemmed yourself beyond all recognition. Unless it turns out that you killed Desmond, which you totally didn’t. God, I hate everything right now. :'(

I’ve started to do my own recaps, I don’t even have any idea what to do for this one. It’s probably just going to be me sobbing through the whole thing. I’m going to have to watch this episode again in order to recap it. The thought of sitting through that again is enough to make me want to light myself on fire. You can view my first recap here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJGmRLxW_60

  • mkhall says:

“Christian Shepherd and Charles Widmore. They knew each other and they’re BFFs. They just are.”

They pledged together at Illuminati University.

Maybe you’re right. Maybe Christian became a drunk once he looked in Widmore’s time machine and saw that Jack was destined to become Island Jesus and save the world.

  • Christina says:

I thought Smokey could not go in the water? I guess that must have been a lie?
So who is the Canidate, did they reveal that? Maybe that was just because in the sideways Locke was a “canidate” for surgery.
So was Smokey off to kill those that escaped the sub or Desmond?
Dang they killed a lot of people off tonight!

  • Christina says:

Lostpedia says SUN was the canidate not JIN. Did any one catch that tonight?
