SPOILER ALERT: Mini-Recap & Discussion Post for “Sundown”

March 2nd, 2010 § 81

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE LATEST EPISODE OF LOST.

After the jump: Mini-recap, questions, theories, and predictions!

This week on Lost, we saw Sideways Sayid bringing flowers to the love of his life Nadia…who was married to his brother! And not only did his brother steal his girl, he also borrowed some money from a few no-goodnicks (i.e. Keamy!). Keamy and Gang roughed up Sayid’s bro, Nadia begged Sayid not to retaliate, and he didn’t – for like 10 whole minutes! Then Keamy’s lackies kidnapped Sayid to try and get him to repay his brother’s debts, only Sayid’s “survival skills” kicked in and he shot them all to death! And then he randomly found a tied-up Jin in a walk-in freezer!

On the island, Dogen asked Sayid to kill Mocke, whom Dogen referred to as “evil incarnate.” The only problem was that when Sayid did as Dogen asked and stabbed Mocke, nothing happened! That is, nothing happened apart from Mocke telling Sayid he could bring Nadia back to life if he just did him this one teeny favor – go back to the temple, tell the people there that it was Mocke’s way or the highway, and then kill Dogen. Which Sayid did, no problemo. So basically all the Others could join up with Mocke or get Smoked Out, and unfortunately most of them seemed to choose the latter and ended up being bloody corpses. Luckily for Kate, Claire was on Team Smokey, and she kept her safe during the rampage, despite apparently wanting to tear Kate’s still-beating heart out of her chest! And then Ilana and Crew showed up and hid in some secret passageway in the temple, so Smokey didn’t get them. Yet.

So in a nutshell, Sayid has totally gone to the dark side, Claire is even creepier than we could have ever imagined, Keamy is a dick in any dimension, and Smokey is seemingly indestructible, but has no problem destroying everyone else.

Not too many theory-type questions to come out of this episode, but…

1. How awesome was slo-mo Mocke at the end? (Terry O’Quinn is TEARING IT UP this season!!) And the creepy “Catch a Falling Star” song over the crazy death scene? Amazing.
2. Claire is SO CRAZY, right? Why do you think she protected Kate? Don’t you think she would have just let Smokey get her?
3. Sayid. So evil. It sucks that his old self is gone, but evil looks good on him, I think.
4. What was Jin doing in the freezer? And what did he have to do with Keamy?
5. Is Dogen really gone? (I doubt it.)
6. What is the deal with Ilana? How does she always know what to do?
7. Can ANYTHING hurt Mocke? Is he really evil incarnate? Can he really grant people’s wishes, or was all that talk just to bring people to the Dark Side? Where is he leading everyone, and why does every living thing on the island need to die if he’s leaving?

That’s all I’ve got for now, I’m sure I’ll be adding to this as I think of more.

Public Service Announcement: Before anyone leaves another “BOO WE NEED ANSWERS” comment, guys? Just enjoy the ride. The show’s almost over, your biggest questions will get answered, and I’m sure it will be awesome. They aren’t giving us a rundown of every answer ever because that would make bad TV. They need to stretch it out. They are showing, not telling. If being patient’s not your thing, wait 3 months and then watch them all in a row. But if you’re going to stick it out, enjoy it while it lasts! We only have 3 months left!! ;_;

  • w says:

Totally agree with that PSA! My mom sat there after the episode bein’ all “But what did we get answered?!” We’re watching the characters go through this stuff! It’d be boring if some character (like lame-ass Dogen) just sat down and spelled it out for us.

We’re not idiots, we can be shown the importance of events without being told out loud!

  • Ack says:

@W: YES! The funny thing is when things do get answered, people either a) are totally overwhelmed and then bitch about THAT, or b) don’t even realize we’re getting a big answer because they are not simple yes or no questions. Like Smokey being a MAN? That is HUGE! But no one was like “PROBLEM SOLVED” haha they were all like “BOO MORE QUESTIONS!”

I think everyone just needs to calm down LOL.

  • Teleholic says:

EXACTLY!! THANK YOU! That’s what I tell my always-complaining friends: ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTS!

    Terry O’Quinn=AWESOMENESS INCARNATE

Sayid joining the Dark Side. GODDAMN IT SAYID WE HAVE COOKIES TOO! But yes, he wears evil veeeery well.

Claire was creepy, and that song, Catch a Falling Star, that was the nursery rhyme song they referenced a few times, right? I wish I was a walking encyclopedia of LOST like you… I can’t remember the exact episode but I’m pretty sure it was Claire-related. I’m also wondering why Claire didn’t really react to the whole ‘I raised your baby’ thing, besides evilly glaring, especially after telling Jin she’d kill her if that were true.

Speaking of Jin locked up in Keamy’s freezer… I got nothing.

Did you notice how Jack was in the hospital when Sayid and Nadia went to see Omar? He’s showing up in ALL their ‘flash-sideways’ and he seems to know that something’s off. That’s gotta be something.

Sayid showed a whole lot of BAMF-ery this episode, especially when he jumped Dogen into the ‘Pool of Resurrection’.

Thanks for this, Ack, and I’ll be back for the full recap on Sunday, as always :D

  • Ack says:

@Teleholic: Yeah, Catch a Falling Star was the song Claire wanted the would-be adoptive parents to sing to Aaron. It’s also what Kate sang to him in an episode off-island, and it played on the little mobile in the hatch where Ethan kept her when he kidnapped her!

  • John says:

Ben doesn’t know which side is right, he is so confused right now. It looks like hes back with Jacob but everyone’s actions are blind and could be the complete opposite for all they know.

He better not die next week like the preview suggested.

  • Antoinette says:

But Sayid let Smocke talk first. That’s the whole problem. It would have worked if he didn’t talk. I think. I also think if everyone on the island dies, the new timeline (where Jack is a dad) will take over. Because they can’t be in two places at once. So I think that before 2007 they have to choose one timeline. Because they can’t be in LA and on the island right? So far in 2007 they’re only on the island.

Maybe Claire’s having second thoughts. Maybe knowing that Aaron is safe in LA changed something.

Ilana is an annoying character. She clearly knows what’s going on but chooses not to share until enough people die first.

  • Diello says:

My theory on tied-up-in-the-freezer Jin: customs confiscated the undeclared money he was delivering, leaving him in debt to crime lord Keamy.

  • Ack says:

@John: NEVER EVER listen to the previews haha ABC does them without any input from the Lost people, and so they almost never have anything to do with anything.

And I somehow doubt they’d announce the death of a main character…in a preview…a whole week before the episode. Makes no sense. Just like the preview for this week’s episode made no sense.

  • Ack says:

@Antoinette: They’re not in 2 places at once, they’re in two separate worlds! Not on the same planet/plane of existence/what have you. Think of the Sideways world as being almost a different show haha.

  • LithiumRox says:

I knew that whoever was tied up in the freezer was gonna be someone we knew. I literally clapped when I saw it was Jin. I’d missed seeing him in that reality. That whole scene I was going “OMG! Its KEAMY! I HATE him! Kill him!” and then “OMG! Its JIN! YAYYY!”

We started calling Mocke Voldemort for a bit in this episode because when Dogen asked Claire who was out there she said “You Know Who”

1.) Was that Catch A Falling Star? It was SO. CREEPY. Is that was Claire was singing down in her whole when Kate went to see her too? I never thought such a sweet song could sound so incredibly creepy.

2.)To me Claire didn’t really seem like she was “saving” Kate, she wasn’t like “OMG GET DOWN HERE NOW IF YOU DON’T WANNA DIE!!1!” She was more just like “Nah, I think I’ll stay down here, that sounds like a better idea to me.” *smiles creepily*

3.) Good, evil, crazy, sane, tank top, polo, it doesn’t matter, Sayid just oozes badassery just by breathing

4.) I dunno, but I cannot WAIT to see what happened/happens to him & Sun in sidewaysland. I would say that I hope next week is a Sun/Jin episode, but the preview looked like a Ben episode, which is ridiculously exciting ^_^

6.) As far as Ilana goes, I have a feeling she’s gonna be one of the unanswered questions, you know? Like we’ll never fully know what her deal is. I really hope that isn’t the case, but I’m afraid it might be.

5.) & 7.)Technically, what Dogen said about Mocke was right, because Mocke did talk before Sayid stabbed him. All he said was “Hello Sayid,” but still, words were spoken. We were wondering if since Dogen & Lennon were left floating in the magical iced-tea pond, maybe they’ll be brought back to life & “claimed” too.

The “ONLY 10 EPISODES LEFT!!!” thing at the end was really depressing. This is all happening so fast! =(
    *dissertation over*

  • John says:

It’s Ben-centric next week so it’ll probably be one of the best episodes in the show’s run in my opinion, but it’s also a fitting place to have his death.

No matter the outcome, we’ll get to see Ben as a teacher. Who knows what that’ll be like.

  • kc says:

“The only problem was that when Sayid did as Dogen asked and stabbed Mocke, nothing happened!”

Sayid allowed Fake!Locke to talk to him before he stabbed him (he said “Hello, Sayid” or something) – Dogan told him that it’d be too late if he allowed Mocke to say anything. That’s prolly why it didn’t work.

  • Antoinette says:

@Ack Hmm…. I’ll bet you a quarter. :D My bet: Both timelines can’t exist together and have to merge, so either the island version or the LA X version of each character must die. Example, LA X Charlie, Shannon, Boone are fine because there’s only one of them. But LA X and Island Jack, Jin, Sawyer, Hurley, etc are in jeopardy.

If Sawyer, let’s say, chose to stay on the Island as the guardian or whatever the hell that is, then LA X Sawyer would have to die. If Island Jack dies, LA X Jack, the good dad, will live. For now I think it’s an individual choice, but it might have to be a group one.

  • freckles says:

Mocke NOT BLEEDING when the knife came out was (while not unexpected) incredibly creepy. Almost as creepy as Claire being in the serial-killer-pit from Silence of the Lambs. SCARY.

I had a theory that Ilana might be the next Island-protector because her name looks like it could be “island” in another language, but “Ilana” means “tree”. Damn.

  • silverdragon76 says:

Kate swinging onto the ladder to evade Smokey was fucking cool.

I think if Claire still wanted to kill her, she wouldn’t have told her how to save herself, she would have let Smokey get her. JMO.

  • JS says:

@Teleholic – Catch a Falling Star was also sung to Claire as a baby by her Dad, Christian, who is also Jack’s dad.

Amazing, amazing episode. Now way O’Quinn doesn’t get an Emmy out of this.

Thanks for the PSA. The ride is fun.

  • Teleholic says:

I thought when he said “Don’t let him talk” he meant don’t let him talk to you as in try to convince you he’s the good one, I don’t think he meant literally “NO WORDS MUST ESCAPE HIS LIPS”.

I agree with Lithiumrox, Claire seemed pretty indifferent to Kate. Which was also weird.

Anyway, the baseball dropping, was that just to show that Dogen was remembering his son? Or is it significant? I can never tell with this show, I don’t want to dismiss ANYTHING.

We only have 10 episodes before the finale (TEN!! :'() so Lost writers, pay attention. MORE Sawyer, mmkay? Preferably in the shirtless manner. THX.

  • Teleholic says:

    Sorry! One more thing:

I think that the infected become “sick” after they accept Mocke’s offer. It seemed like Sayid only went full-on psycho after he accepted Mocke’s offer to bring back Nadia. Maybe that happened to Claire, too.

  • Antoinette says:

So what about Ben? He also was healed by the iced tea springs, but back when it was clear. Is he okay? Because he was supposed to have lost his innocence remember? Was he claimed?

  • NJValkyrie says:

I know Kate wanted to find Claire but, even though Claire’s clearly crazy, she’s going to trot off into the jungle with Locke? Last she heard, Jeremy Bentham was dead, but now she’s going to follow him without asking any questions?

I do like the scene where she & Miles are running in the temple.

    Miles: “This way!”
Kate: “I have to find Claire!”
    Miles: “See ya!”

  • Wjf says:

My guess is that the sideways world is what would have happened had Jacob not influenced the characters.

  • kc says:

I though that the bomb going off in 1977 had a sort of butterfly effect (affecting everything post-1977) and that’s why the sideways universe exists.

  • Laura says:

Did anyone notice if Keamy was wearing the watch Jin was delivering for Mr. Paik? If the money was confiscated in US customs, then when Jin went to Keamy without the money Keamy tied him up and put him in the freezer… hmm…?

  • Huh???BBQ? says:

1)Doesn’t anyone else think that 3 peeps from downtown Tikrit getting together for a powwow would be speaking Arabic and not English?
2)Could be Mr Paik’s watch. Unfortch can’t zoom in.
3)a)Jacob could have influenced the sideways characters, but there would be no avenue (the plane crashing) for them to meet again.
    b) Maybe no one took over Jacob’s job, therefore the island sunk, therefore Jacob was not needed in the big plan as there was no plan.
    4) Ben episode next week *squeeee*. I wonder if he is badass in sideways land as well. You could do your history homework, or you could kill three of your classmates, we accept both. Would Ben be evil in sideways land, or would he never have had to be “healed” in the ice-tea broth because Sayid never would have shot him because he would never have been on the island?

  • Wifi says:

    EGGS!KEAMY IS THE BEST THING.

    THAT IS ALL.

BEN NEXT WEEK ALL HANDS BRACE FOR AWESOME.

  • John says:

Maybe the alternate world isn’t even real and is somehow a relfection of what each of the characters truly wants back home. I think that as the sideways world unfolds further, we’ll see that all of the characters in it are truly happy.

I can’t put the rest of this together, but I don’t think anyone can ever be spot on accurate with this show.

  • Danko says:

Keamy and Mr. Paik are working together. Paik guessed that Jin was attempting to run off with Sun, hence all the cash Jin got busted with. Now Sun (WHAT does Jin see in her anyway????)has taken the opportunity to get the heck away from Jin and her Dad. Paik wants Jin to give up Sun’s location, and to punish him for his run fail. You know that if you’re in a butcher shop, it’s baaad news.

One more thing about the bargains, Claire’s Mom was in an irreversible coma back in Australia, the six leave the island, then we next see her talking to Jack at Christian’s funeral. I’m thinking Claire struck her own bargain, but she doesn’t remember.

  • Elynne says:

For what it’s worth, “Catch a Falling Star” was a huge hit for Perry Como back in the ’50s. Yes, I’m that old ~~ and Perry was such a charmer ~~ which makes the use of that song even creepier!

  • ELAINE says:

The preview for next week’s episode said the person who killed so many people will meet his own demise and the camera focused on Ben.. Oh man!

  • maureen_in_mukilteo says:

I can never analyze episodes until a couple of days after the show. It takes me a day just to get over the shock before I can start recognizing symbolism or appreciate the acting or the music. Terry must have been good because my heart is still pounding and I’m very upset. I can say the fight scenes were fantastic. So were the Smoky scenes. Left me speechless. I felt like someone had knocked me upside the head.

I am just so disappointed in Sayid. I shed a tear or two when he asked about Nadia and you could see him going over to the dark side even as he said her name. And IN BOTH UNIVERSES he gave into temptation. Kate, I think, has not gone over. Ben must have got out of the Temple somehow. Guess the ash doesn’t work when Jacob and Dogen are dead. So this is the sickness? I would like to hope that Sayid did this against his will. That once a person listens to Smocke and considers his offer they go all zombie. Smocke is the Devil if he can bring back the dead. Bet he offered to bring back Juliet for Sawyer. Odd that he didn’t offer Ben anything to follow him or that Ben didn’t follow him.

I have to keep telling myself that this is going according to Jacob’s plan. He knew what was going to happen. So we have Ben, Jack, Hurley, Sun and Richard left of the original group. They are the good guys. I think all of them are unturnable. I should be working but I’m going to go look up bible verses.

  • lifebreakingin says:

Yeah, it’s like with Alias and O’Quinn was given the episode where they had to spell out the entire mystery of Sydney’s missing years in one hour, per the network’s orders, b/c the show was “too complicated.” Don’t make him do it again! :) Let it unfold just as naturally as the whole mystery was built up.

    LOVED the episode.

  • Jenn says:

on a Claire note, she didn’t really tell Kate to get in the pit to save her life… she just said that SHE was gonna stay there, then Smokey came around the corner and Kate jumped in. Also, I think Claire would rather kill Kate herself and is biding her time. Did you see the uber creepy eyes she was doing when Kate told her she had Aaron? To me, that’s not indifference… that’s “I will kill you… not now, but in your sleep or when you least expect it and it will be violent and my revenge shall be complete”. scary.

  • iczorro says:

Sayid vs Dogen. I sat up and said out loud, “It’s the Pwnage Olympics!”

  • Breesus says:

If there is anybody in the world who makes evil and murderous mayhem look hotter than Sayid, I don’t know who it is!!

That said, I loved the creepy music over the death scene, but my absolute favorite moment was when Mocke looked at Kate over Sayid’s shoulder as she came out of the temple. That look was evil incarnate and it was AMAZING. Literally gave me the chills.

I’m torn between not being able to wait to see what happens and not wanting it to end!!

  • jewel says:

bravo ack! if I wanted answers spelled out for me I would have stopped watching this show a long time ago!
btw my husband HATES this show and stopped watching 3/4 way thru s1 and makes fun of me for watching this show :(
slo mo locke reminded me of the * happy * montages back from s1 wich I miss !!
anyway I love this show and I love you !!

  • karlaanne says:

i am just so stressed about next week. i’m hoping it’s all a ruse. please don’t kill my sweet benry :( i wont be able to handle it!!!!!!!

  • Exception says:

I had a crazy, arms-waving-wildly-above-my-head moment this morning on my way to work.

I haven’t decided if I trust Smokey yet, but say he does it. Say he gives Sayid what he always wanted that died in his arms, but rather than Nadia, he brings back Shannon? o_O

That would be like the ultimate slap in the face. Was it all worth it now, Sayid???

  • Flaknitter01 says:

Kill Kate! Kill Kate! That would be the best! Only thing better would be killing Jack, but I’m thoroughly convinced that’s going to happen anyway, so…

LOVED seeing Keamy again, if only for two minutes, but the bitch makes good eggs! Hottest villain evah!

Slo Mo Mocke makes me think the Dark Side might be a nice place to be…

  • jody says:

The only reason I am sure that they are not killing Ben next week is cuz the promos told me so. Insanely psyched about his epi though.

This is like any really good book – you are desperate to keep reading to find out what happens, but then you will be through, and that is even worse!

Don’t think Claire helped Kate in any way, she is just biding her time to find out what happened to Aaron. Great scene – Kate was so proud of her selfless help, and crazy Claire was just fuming!

  • snoop says:

Your Lighthouse recap had a line about Sayid radiating ‘PURE PWN’. Well, how about that, heh? Sayid going dark/psycho was a complete joy to watch, and the acting was top-notch from all parties involved. On to your questions :

    1) Slo-mo Mocke was fantastic, but it makes me wonder why he needs to for an army. He’s just decimated most of the others. Who else is left to oppose him behind a few of the castaways?

    2) Claire helped Kate, so she can kill her herself, maybe she wants the satisfaction of doing it herself?

    3) Dark Sayid = WIN!! He’s always been the guy with a guilty conscience, even during torcha. ‘Guilt-free and smiling as he kills people’ Sayid is a breath of fresh air for the character. The cold and efficient pure-pwn-throat-slashing, ie, MURDER of Lennon was a great scene. Somewhere on FOX, Jack Bauer must be feeling proud.

    4) TBD, probably Keamy was to receive the money which was seized at customs and/or Jin’s menacing Korean tone got to him.

    5) As much as I can accept that Dogen needed to die for Smocke to go to town and run Bauer-like-amok on the temple people, I still don’t get why. How come he was the last thing that prevented Smocke from entering the temple?

    6) Ilana is Jacob’s f*ck-buddy, plain and simple. Those two have been slapping thighs since forever. I wouldn’t be surprised if she turned out to be as old as Alpert.

    7) I believe Mocke believes he is the good guy. To him, his actions are justified. But he’s also a master manipulator, knowing which buttons to push to recruit people. Claire’s baby, Sayid’s Nadia, Sawyer’s desperation and anger after Juliet’s Death. And is he indestructible? I believe so, in fact, the scene where Sayid stabs Locke reminds me of the last scene in Scarface, where Al Pacino stands there and just takes a few bullets and basically tells them to go f*ck themselves.

I also agree with your PSA. If you’ve stuck with the show for five seasons and you’ve made it this far, at the very least, wait until after the series finale to complain.

Now, I have a few questions.

    1) Ben continues to be traumatized every week and his little cameo was entertaining. But why didn’t Sayid even try to kill him?

    2) Does Mocke have a plan for Kate too? When he saw her exiting the temple, he just glanced at her and moved on. Or is she irrelevant to his plans?

    3) Where the hell is Sawyer? He needs to be in every episode!!

    4) Even if Mocke is evil, Jacob is a giant douche. Why didn’t he even try to help prevent the temple massacre? They were his followers, which HE brought to the island. Thoughts?

    5) We saw Mocke and Claire standing outside the circle of ash. Yet once Dogen was dead, it became a non-issue. What gives?

  • Kim says:

Can’t kill Kate ’til she knows where Aaron is, yes? Since next week is a Benry episode, we must be getting Jin the week after, since we don’t know his island fate or why he was in the freezer. (Seriously, wasn’t he JUST with Claire??)

  • Clairedelunatic says:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre. I always get the feeling I’m more LOST after an episode because this season they’re all question generating machines and sitting on the ground taking turns wringing my hands and rubbing gravel through my hair. So now Jack and Hurley and a few others are going to be hunted??? I’m guessing since they are candidates and Mocke is recruiting, though now that he’s taken the temple will he do something with it???

I totally thought Sayid told Kate to “Ask my Ass” and then the camera panned where? To his ass…. LOVED IT! (he actually said ask Miles)

  • Mockemewillyou? says:

I was wondering how the sideways world worked. It seems to me that once one of the 816ers make a choice on the island, the sideways world mirrors what happened on the island.

Jack is finally getting to know his son, at the same time as he is reflecting on his role on the island, and is probably accepting his role.

Locke dies and is buried on the island, and Locke’s real world ‘Don’t tell me what I can’t do’ persona is buried.

Sayid decides to help Mocke (interestingly enough so he could ‘have Nadia’ back) and lo-and-behold, he has Nadia back by being all badass. Wanna bet Sayid’s brother isn’t long for living? I wonder how much control Mocke has over the sideways world?

  • Nuala says:

So Sayid is eeevil in both limelines/universes/stories/whatever… I was so shocked when he drowned Dogen and killed Lennon, WTF Sayid?!?!?! I just hope Dogen isn’t completely gone…

  • darcy says:

I was thinking Jin was sent to give Keamy (underworld-boss-type) the watch from Sun’s father, only Keamy wasn’t happy with the offering and trying to figure out what to do with him.

Either that or Jin is a suddenly a restauranteur. He’s locked in the freezer so that Keamy could have his meeting with Sayid and cook an egg. :-)

  • Kristen says:

“Keamy is a dick in any dimension” = TRUE MF’ING STORY. Way to make eggs terrifying, you creeper.

  • Kristi says:

dogen said jacob recruited him for a job. i think jacob recruited him to be the protector of the temple and when he was gone, it was no longer protected.

  • Kristi says:

Any chance there are more than two realities…that when we see a flash sideways, perhaps they aren’t necessarily the same alternate reality? If so, Kate could be Jack’s Baby Mama.

  • Miss.Sarah says:

Totally random! But I have a theory that Sarah was cheating on Jack with Jacob! Did we ever see who that guy was?

I was so confused in that temple scene. So where is Ben now? I have this image of him in my head standing alone in the temple all “Hey guys? Guys?” *sadface*

Is everyone on or almost on Team Smokey someone who killed or nearly killed a person before coming to the island? I feel like that’s important, Sayeed, Jin and Sawyer did some pretty horrible stuff to people before, maybe that’s why they belong in Smokey’s entourage?

I was so, so sad that Dogen died without taking his shirt off. Through the fight scene I was praying for clothes to be ripped off. There were plants thrown, various random objects became weapons, why didn’t anyone try to use their shirt as a weapon?! Or at least change to white shirts before leaping into the spring. Come on!
Dogen must come back because I love Hiroyuki Sanada so, so so very much!
